“Ivory soap, It floats!” That was Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) first slogan for their new soap product; unlike other soaps that would slip out of your hand and sink in the water, ivory floated. The soap invented by P&G was first sold on the market in 1879 and became extremely popular in those days; it is still one of the most bought soaps today. Ivory was most famous for its floating property and its the ingredients because it was better on the skin than castile soap (made from olive oil) that was sold in those days. Surprisingly, how ivory came to float was an accident turned into an ingenious invention: a batch of soap accidentally mixed for too long, causing too much air into the mixture. Another story states that Gamble’s son was the one who discovered the chemical make-up that caused the soap to float.
In 1992, Procter & Gamble started testing new ingredients in their soap and came up with alterations to the original soap that was created in the 1800s, and by altering the soap one was invented that had ingredients to make it softer on the skin (though it did not float). The ivory soap ingredients for the classic bar consist of sodium cocoate, sodium chloride, water, sodium tallowate, magnesium sulfate, sodium silicate, and fragrance; for the new non-floating soap the ingredients do not include water, magnesium sulfate, and sodium silicate, but glycerin and sodium palmate. A major reason for the change in ingredients was that many people were asking why ivory did not have any glycerin in it because glycerin makes skin soft after drying off. Not having it in the soap caused skin to dry out and the natural oils in the skin were dissolved. Putting glycerin in the soap would have caused the soap price to rise, which is why for the longest time, P&G’s soap did not include glycerin in soap ingredients.
Today, ivory soap is known as one of the best brand name soaps bought in the store and is prized by people who are about holistic health because it is all-natural and cost-efficient. Ivory is one of the best antibacterial soaps, the antimicrobial activity is better than other soaps, which means that it breaks down bacteria proficiently and the bacteria rinses off the body well so that it stays off. Some ivory soap reviews say that they like the soap because it is cheap, has a good scent, it floats, it is mild on your skin, and it is natural. The major criticisms for ivory soap are that it dries out skin and makes it itchy and that the bar of soap does not last long enough because after a few uses it dissolves. Despite this, it is still one of the best bought brand name soaps and some people grew up on ivory and have not changed products because they have found the soap to be cost- efficient and effective.
When purchasing the soap, it may be a smart idea to save more money with some ivory soap coupons. Although the soap is cheap enough, saving a little more money is never a bad thing. Usually ivory comes in a package deal, where one package will contain three or more bars of soap. Having them sold by the bundle helps consumers stay away longer before they need to return to the store to purchase additional soap. The best coupons for any type of product are the half-off deals or the 20 to 50 percent off savings, and ivory products now come in lotion, hand soap, and even detergent. Some of the deals that one can get on ivory products with coupons are $2 off of ivory’s detergent. Also, you can get 25¢ off of any three pack, and there is one coupon where you can save $1 on any one pack of three for use at stores like Wal-Mart, Kroger’s, and CVS. The best part is that three packs of ivory are usually $1 so, in the end, the pack is free.
Soap is not the only product that has the ivory brand name attached to it, and Procter & Gamble soap has advanced with the times. Today you can find ivory hand soap, ivory dish detergent, ivory body wash, ivory lotion, and lastly detergent called ivory snow. Ivory’s detergent is mild, cleans without using harsh chemicals, leaves clothes residue- free after rinsing, and leaves clothes feeling soft. Also, the detergent can be found in a liquid or powder form, and can be used on all types of clothing, from cotton to polyester. This ensures that clothes will not shrink or get worn out from washing them with ivory detergent. Ivory is all natural pure and can be used on colors, whites, darks, multi colors, delicates and all sensitive fabrics. Today the detergent can be purchased at a local store, like Wal-Mart, or it can be found online and can be purchased over sites like Google shopping and Amazon.
Ivory soap is better than other soaps not only because of its ingredients, flexibility in form (powder, liquid, detergent, etc.), and cost-efficiency, but also because it has a trusted name in the soap business. There is something to be said for a company and product name that has existed over time.
